How does Group Analysis work?
I select 8 people whom I think could work together and learn from one another. They need to be have a balance of similar issues and different approaches to life. People are encouraged to talk to each other in a spontaneous and honest fashion, knowing they will be listened to thoughtfully. I bring to the group, my analytic training and understanding.
Why is Group Analysis useful?
When someone joins a group it is natural for them to have questions or concerns. What am I going to get out of this? Will there be enough time to deal with my own problems in a group setting? What if I don't like the people in my group?
Group Analysis gives people a supportive experience of being with others and discovering how individual one's own thought patterns are, and how if one can link up thinking and feeling in new ways, change follows.
How do I know whether I would benefit from a Group Analysis?
If you were interested in thinking about an analytic group we would meet. I would need to know the nature of your current difficulties and in talking together we would arrive at some understanding of how they have arisen and what sustains them. I would then be able to advise you whether psychotherapy is appropriate to your needs and if so whether Group Analysis is the treatment of choice. It is sometimes helpful to have some individual sessions before joining a group. If we decide that another form of therapy, perhaps as a couple or a family is required I can usually provide a referral to a respected colleague or provide the therapy myself. I have a wide network of contacts across the country with different specialisms.
